The Start of my Encaustic Journey
In 2019 I left my Corporate Textile Design Job to Start doing my own work with my own Name and Brand. I felt I needed to Explore new Creative outlets and take my existing skills to a new level. Another Reason for this big move is to be able to spend more time with my Family. My wife and kids are my world and want to share this journey with them.
A new creative passion of mine is the Ancient Medium of Encaustic. Used by the Greek-Romans in 500 A.D. , for funerary portraits for the mummies in Kyro. Some of these paintings exist today in surprisingly good condition.
Encaustic in Greek translates as “to Burn in”. Using fire to melt Bees wax, Tree Resin and Pigments to create a medium in which to paint with. This way of painting has nearly been lost over time but now is starting to make a resurgence in to the art scene. I have a deep respect for the artists who have kept it going and has adapted it to our modern world. Im privileged to be able to carve out a small part of our home to build a small encaustic studio and to explore what this Medium has to offer.
